Hokkaido Uncovered: A 7-Day Journey Through Japan’s Wild North

Plan Your Bespoke Journey
  • From July 2025
  • 7 days
  • Hokkaido

From Sapporo’s seafood markets to Shiretoko’s raw wilderness, this 7-day escape is designed for those seeking adventure and natural discovery.

Hot Spring Hideaways

Days 1–3: Sapporo

Begin your journey in Sapporo, where mountain views frame city streets and daily life pulses through local markets. Enjoy a guided food tour of Nijo Market, famed for its fresh crab and sashimi bowls, as well as the world famours Ramen Alley for local noodle delights. Stroll the leafy grounds of Nakajima-koen, especially vivid in autumn. For a sunset panorama, head to the top of Sapporo TV Tower, overlooking Odori Park and the skyline beyond.

Days 3–4: Noboribetsu & Lake Toya

Next, step into Hokkaido’s geothermal heart. Wander the sulfuric steam vents of Jigokudani Hell Valley, then unwind in a lakeside onsen at Marukoma, where natural hot springs meet open water views. Canoe along the glassy surface of Lake Toya, and savour the region’s renowned kaisendon — a seafood bowl layered with fresh, local catch.

Nijo Market, Sapporo – Devour through premium kaisendon, fresh crab, glistening uni, and hand-cut sashimi at a quiet local counter. Your guide will help you navigate the best seasonal finds and introduce the stories behind Hokkaido’s celebrated coastal cuisine.
Noboribetsu Jigokudani – Wander through the sulfur-streaked ravines of Hell Valley, where steaming vents and bubbling pools give Noboribetsu its otherworldly nickname — one of Japan’s most dramatic geothermal landscapes.
Shiretoko National Park – One of Japan’s last true wildernesses. A protected haven for bears, deer, and eagles, Shiretoko offers pristine lakes, dramatic coastal trails, and a deep connection to the natural world.

Wild Ponds & National Parks

Days 4–5: Biei & Furano

Continue into central Hokkaido via private car transfer, where wide-open landscapes define the region’s poetic charm. Visit the Shirogane Blue Pond, an iridescent pool surrounded by silver birch trees, and nearby Shirogane Waterfall. Hike the volcanic slopes of Mt Furano, where steam rises from natural vents and alpine views reward the climb.

Days 5–7: Shiretoko National Park

End your journey in Shiretoko, a remote UNESCO World Heritage site on the northeastern edge of Hokkaido. With a private driver and wildlife guide, explore this untouched peninsula — home to brown bears, eagles, foxes, and marine life. Hike near steaming volcanic vents around Mt Io, walk the elevated trails above the lakes of Shiretoko Goko, and watch the sun set over the Sea of Okhotsk from Cape Puyuni. Shiretoko offers a rare opportunity to experience Japan’s natural environment in its most unspoiled and elemental form.

Ainu Nibutani Carving Studio Tour – Visit the studio of a renowned Ainu woodcarver and discover how Hokkaido’s Indigenous heritage lives on through traditional tools, motifs, and spiritual expression in wood.
Canoeing on Lake Toya – Glide across the glassy waters of Lake Shikotsu with a private canoe guide. Surrounded by volcanic peaks and dense forest, this crater lake offers some of the clearest water in Japan.
Shiretoko Nature Tour – Join a guided walk through Shiretoko’s rich ecosystems. With local insight, spot native wildlife, learn about sustainable preservation, and experience Hokkaido’s nature up close.
