Sacred Pathways: A 14-Day Adventure Across Japan

Plan Your Bespoke Journey
  • From July 2025
  • 14 days
  • Tokyo, Kyoto, Wakayama & Beyond

Trace the steps of monks, pilgrims, and poets on this rare journey through Japan’s spiritual heartlands.

Week One

Days 1-5: Tokyo

Arrive in the capital via private transfer, and settle into luxury ryokan, Hoshinoya Tokyo. Begin your journey with a private zazen session inside a peaceful temple, tucked into one of Tokyo’s oldest neighbourhoods few travellers ever visit. Explore the quiet backstreets of Yanaka, where small temples, incense shops, and timeworn alleyways preserve Tokyo’s spiritual roots. Take a private tour of Meiji Shrine, Japan’s most iconic Shinto site, set within a towering forest that hums with silence. Conclude with a private taiko drumming workshop, learning how sound and spirit intertwine in one of Japan’s oldest musical traditions.

Days 5-7: Magome Juku

Travel by private transfer to the mountains of Gifu, where the Nakasendo Trail winds through cedar forests and stone-paved villages. Settle into Magome-juku with a local guide and explore hidden paths, teahouses and viewpoints of Japan’s historic route. Hike between villages, discover local crafts and woodwork, and visit the Wakihonjin Museum, housed in a former Edo-period inn once reserved for high-ranking officials.

Higashi Chaya District, Kanazawa — Wander Kanazawa’s geisha quarter where cobblestone alleys and teahouses preserve the grace of a bygone era. Visit gold leaf ateliers, sample matcha in century-old cafés, and witness evening lantern light casting shadows on latticed façades — an intimate glimpse into Japan’s refined cultural traditions, still alive today.
Magome Juku, Gifu — Once a vital post town along the Nakasendo Trail, Magome is now a peaceful mountain village lined with timber buildings and surrounded by soft hills. It’s the perfect place to reflect on Japan’s past, follow in the footsteps of samurai and poets, and begin a deeper journey through time and terrain.
Kumano Kodo, Wakayama — A UNESCO-listed network of sacred trails, the Kumano Kodo leads pilgrims through moss-covered forests, hot spring villages, and ancient shrines. Walk beneath Japan’s tallest torii gate, pass by stone jizō statues, and arrive at Nachi Falls, where mountain spirit and myth meet in a dramatic display of natural power.

Week Two

Day 7-9: Kanazawa

Arrive by bullet train to Kanazawa, where craftsmanship and heritage shape daily life. Stroll through Higashi Chaya, the city’s historic geisha district, where latticed wooden teahouses conceal centuries-old rituals. Enjoy an exclusive private geisha dinner, where you’ll dine and converse with a practising geigi — one of the few still performing in the refined Kanazawa style. Visit Kenroku-en Garden at first light with your guide, and stroll its winding paths while the city still sleeps. Step inside a local sake brewery for a private tasting led by a toji, or master brewer.

Day 9-12: Kyoto

Go far beyond the tourist routes to experience the spiritual heart of Japan’s ancient capital. Begin with a private tea ceremony inside a traditional machiya, guided by a tea master. Enjoy a private wagashi confectionery workshop, where you’ll sculpt seasonal sweets into edible artworks. On a private half-day tour, explore the tea plantations of Uji, Japan’s tea capital, where family-run farms have produced some of the finest matcha for generations. End your days in the tranquil and luxurious Aman Kyoto.

Day 12–14: Wakayama

End your pilgrimage on the sacred Kumano Kodo, a UNESCO-listed network of trails used by emperors, monks, and seekers for over a thousand years. With a private guide, hike sections of the Nakahechi Route, where moss-covered jizo statues line the forest paths and ancient cedar trees tower overhead. Depart to your private island accommodation to soak in mineral-rich waters after long days on the trail. These final days bring the journey full circle; grounding, cleansing, and deeply connected to the stillness that runs beneath it all.

Private Meditation, Tokyo – Step inside a historic Zen temple in Tokyo for a one-on-one zazen experience. Guided by a monk, you’ll learn the breathing, posture, and mindset behind this ancient practice — a rare opportunity to disconnect, slow down, and begin your journey with clarity.
Private Geisha Dinner, Kyoto – Dine in an intimate Kyoto teahouse with a performing geiko, enjoying seasonal cuisine, conversation, and music in one of Japan’s most exclusive cultural settings. It’s a fleeting, magical encounter with a tradition few travellers experience firsthand.
Kumano Kodo Hiking Tour – Walk a sacred trail with a local guide who brings the mythology, nature, and stories of the Kumano Kodo to life. Discover ancient shrines hidden in the forest, rest at wayside tea houses, and experience Japan’s most spiritual landscape on foot.
Reviews

I wholeheartedly recommend Views from Japan to anyone seeking a deeper Japan experience. The whole process was incredibly valuable and truly enhanced my trip in Japan.

Felix Hidajat, London, UK

Ben was instrumental in helping us navigate our trip to Japan. He was able to thoughtfully listen and arranged everything from places to stay, eat, see.

Kim Dunham, New York, USA

The session with Ben was extremely valuable. Making the most of our time and money is crucial for a trip to Japan, and this is a great way to ensure that happens.

Hoshinoya Tokyo – Step inside this modern ryokan, where traditional Japanese hospitality unfolds just moments from the Imperial Palace. Each floor serves as a private sanctuary, complete with ochanoma lounge and quietly attentive hosts; a rare chance to experience old-world ritual in the centre of modern Tokyo.
Aman Kyoto – Tucked into a hidden forest at the foot of a mountain, Aman Kyoto is more than a hotel — it’s a retreat. Stone paths lead to moss gardens and cedar bathtubs, while seasonal meals and subtle service turn each moment into a quiet ritual of its own.
Kumano Bettei Nakanoshima, Wakayama – Backed by the gentle sounds of the Katsuura Bay, Kumano Bettei Nakanoshima sits on its own private island. Enjoy highly seasonal kaiseki cuisine celebrating local produce in the on-site restaurant, and for an unforgettable experience, arrive by air and embark on a bespoke helicopter tour.
