Naoshima by Boat: A Journey Through Japan’s Creative Coast

Plan Your Bespoke Journey
  • From October 2025
  • 3 days
  • Seto Inland Sea

Sail through the waters of the Seto Inland Sea aboard a privately chartered yacht, discovering quiet island towns, immersive art spaces, and Japan’s deeply held traditions.

Day 1 & 2

Enjoy Views of Shimanami Kaido

Begin in the port town of Onomichi, where your yacht awaits. Cruise beneath the dramatic suspension bridges of the Shimanami Kaido, soaking in sea views and slow rhythms. Disembark on Omishima, the so-called “Island of the Gods,” to visit Oyamazumi Shrine and its impressive Treasure Hall. Optional: take a gentle cycling tour with a local guide. In the evening, arrive at Setoda Port and check in to the impeccably restored Azumi Setoda for a refined dinner of Setouchi produce.

Private Cruise & Zen Gardens

After breakfast, cruise onward to Bella Vista Marina. From there, travel to Shinshoji Zen Museum and Gardens — a serene cultural space that invites deep sensory immersion. Walk through landscaped gardens, experience calligraphy, tea, and a nourishing Zen lunch. Later, continue by yacht across the tranquil sea to Uno Port. Unwind at Uno Hotel and indulge in a regional dinner, followed by a soak in the Setouchi Onsen Tamanoyu spa.

Setoda Port Town — Tucked into the Seto Inland Sea, Setoda is where island life moves at a slower pace. Climb to the hilltop pagoda of Kosanji Temple for panoramic sea views, stroll through backstreets lined with citrus trees, and visit small workshops where craft and community still shape daily life.
Shinshoji Zen Museum and Gardens — A peaceful refuge blending architecture, art, and spiritual experience. Stroll through moss-lined pathways, savour a nourishing bowl of Zen cuisine, and explore galleries dedicated to calligraphy and sculpture. Here, the practice of Zen is translated into space, taste, and stillness.
Naoshima Island — A singular blend of creativity and calm. On Naoshima, art is everywhere — embedded in the landscape, the architecture, the community. Explore site-specific works, world-famous museums by Tadao Ando, and contemporary art housed in restored fishermen’s homes. This is modern Japan at its most thoughtful and transformative.

Day 3

Naoshima Art Trip

Cruise across to Naoshima, the world-renowned island of art. Spend the day immersed in striking architecture and installations — from the meditative Chichu Art Museum to the coastal minimalism of Benesse House. Discover Tadao Ando’s structures, Kusama’s iconic pumpkin, and emerging contemporary spaces nestled between quiet island streets. Return to Uno or Takamatsu by private boat to conclude your journey.

Private Charter Cruise — Step aboard a 77-foot Italian cruiser designed for indulgent, slow travel. With an expansive deck, open-air lounge, and Jacuzzi, this vessel is your floating sanctuary. Enjoy multi-course French meals prepared by a private onboard chef as the sea carries you across one of Japan’s most quietly cinematic regions.
Lunch Cruise — Meals aboard the cruiser are seasonal, elegant, and deeply local. Using ingredients sourced from the islands and coastlines of Setouchi, each dish reflects the bold simplicity of the region’s culinary identity — plated with finesse and best enjoyed as the horizon drifts by.
Onsen Bathing – Slip into the restorative waters of Yubune, Azumi Setoda’s exclusive bathhouse. Housed in a beautifully reimagined public onsen, the space blends traditional onsen with minimalist design, offering a rare sense of warmth and quiet.
