How to Spend a Day in Tomigaya, Tokyo

Tucked away just west of Shibuya, Tomigaya feels worlds away from the chaotic nature of Tokyo. This is a place where creativity and design thrive behind understated facades; a neighbourhood that has excellent coffee, thoughtfully designed boutique shops, and low-key yet highly polished dining. Here are a few ways I’d spend a day in this effortlessly cool pocket of Japan’s capital.

Coffee: Fuglen Tokyo
Start your morning at Fuglen (open from 7am – a rarity in Tokyo!), a Norwegian-style cafe focusing on high-quality sustainable coffee with a mid-century designed interior. Swing by in the evening for a lineup of Scandinavian craft beers and a menu of world-class cocktails.

Shop: Monocle Shop
Part Tokyo Bureau, part impeccably curated retail space. Opened in 2014, the shop is backed by sleek wooden slats and stocked with everything you’d expect from Monocle; carefully chosen photo books, finely stitched Japanese clothing, and high-quality homegoods.

Sleep: Trunk Hotel Yoyogi Park
End your day at Tomigaya’s brightest new resident, Trunk Hotel, where Tokyo’s energy meets calm, considered design. Swim amongst the treetops in the rooftop infinity pool and retreat to your Scandinavian-designed room – think sleek concrete textures softened by wood and linens – and enjoy a nightcap in the lounge or your very own balcony. It’s a place to feel both tucked away and at the heart of it all.
